Relaţiile sunt raporturi statornice între persoane, între persoane şi instituţii sau între instituţii prin şefii lor. Ele se bucură de un statut social sau de unul juridic care reglementează funcţionarea lor. Fundamentul lor este social, ele fiind în ultimă instanţă o modalitate de comunicare între parteneri. Însăşi comunicarea, indiferent de natura ei (orală, scrisă, virtuală, prin internet etc.) este elementul fundamental al acestora.
