Abstract

The present article addresses role conflict, role ambiguity and role overload as antecedents of disfunctional job behaviors, among others psychological burnout, depression, anxiety and irritation. These behaviors, considered by the psychological literature to be direct results of occupational stress, seem to be closely related to the negative dimensions of the work role. Thus, we enounter a strong possiblity that these behaviors are directly influenced by work role dimensions rather than by stressfull events. Based on a pool of data collected from 72 subjects on 3 questionnaires in the ALPHA organization, the authors argue on behalf of the hypotheses that (a) job overload has no strong influence on either job role ambiguity or role conflict, these two perceptive variables being not among the causes of job overload, (b) psychological burnout is heavily conditioned by job overload as a perceptive dimension, (c) occupational anxiety is a direct resultant of role ambiguity, (d) workplace irritation and irritation with certain aspects of the work/job situation is first and foremost a result of role conflict and (e) depressive feelings towards the workplace are heavily bound with role overload.
